This training will present theory related to the relational trauma and abuse often experienced by those in relationships where there is chronic infidelity and/or sexual compulsion/addiction. Empirically researched treatment theory models and techniques will be explored. Relevant ethical standards and potential issues will be identified and explored. We will discuss potential cultural/gender/sexual orientation issues related to this population, which can impact treatment-seeking behaviours and access. We will examine the assessment and treatment of trauma and other possible co-occurring mental health disorders for the partners, the person with the compulsive behaviours, and the larger system. Impact on the relational couples unit and treatment interventions will be presented as well. We will explore the larger system issues that can impact help-seeking for the partner, who is often isolated or marginalized in the community at large as well as in treatment settings. We will present information and strategies regarding prevention and intervention, including the role of advocacy, community education, and research to better serve this population.
