Trauma-Informed Coaching: Your Tough Questions Answered
For individuals traumatized by sex addiction and partner betrayal, one thing is clear: getting the right kind of help is critically important. Historically, this help has come from therapists, clergy and twelve-step communities. But over the past decade, a new wave of professionals has surged into our recovery-focused ecosystem: coaches who specialize in betrayal, addiction, trauma and sexual health.
From its inception, APSATS has recognized the value of equipping these earnest practitioners with rigorous training, consultation, certification and collaboration. But here's the million-dollar question: Can coaches actually get the job done? When it comes to engaging with clients in trauma, what kind of coaches help vs harm—and how can we equip ourselves to recognize the difference? How can we trust coaches to know what they're doing, and to practice within the scope of their professional qualifications? Can coaches really handle cases fraught with betrayal, addiction, trauma and sex? And can they do so with ethical competence, confidence and responsibility?
Whether you're a professional seeking info or an emerging coach within our field of practice, veteran coaches Catherine Etherington and Rae Gaelyn Emerson will seek to “raise the bar” by addressing your tough questions—from "What is coaching, anyway?" to "What does the future hold for coaches working with partners, addicts and more?”
Learning Objective #1: Articulate how coaching differs from therapy, identify the boundaries that govern coaching as a modality, and explore key factors that indicate whether coaching is (or is not) appropriate for clients with problematic sexual behavior and/or partner betrayal trauma
Learning Objective #2: Explore how coaching can deepen, inspire and accelerate recovery, empowering clients to reach and grow beyond the basics.
Learning Objective #3: Compare, contrast and evaluate coaches based upon 7 identified criteria: (a) motivation, (b) training, (c) mentoring, consultation and supervision, (d) certification, (e) professional experience, (f) collaboration and (g) continuing education.
